What will happen if I just stop paying maintenance fees on time share?

I am 75 years old, excellent credit, retired,. I wish to simply not have some time shares. I didn't pay on one time share, (actually was sick for several months and forgot)  and the company just sent a letter stating that they were taking it back. I didn't get any previous calls or letter. Simple. They got property back and I did not pay any more fees. Haven't heard from them since. Would prefer to do that again. Companies that offer to rent or sell are mostly scams, and ridicously overpriced. I think just to stop paying is the best choice.
